Homemade Pizza (Tasty Tuesday)

I love pizza.  I mean, like really love, it.  I could eat pizza multiple times per week for several different meals a day.  That would be expensive though and you all know that I’m cheap thrifty.  So, to satisfy my craving and my need to save money, I finally gave in to the idea of homemade pizza.

I started with this Homemade Pizza Dough recipe.  It turned out great.  My hubby usually doesn’t like any kind of homemade crust, but he gave this two thumbs up.  The fact that my bread machine did all the work is just an extra plus.

Because hubby & my parents (who joined us for pizza night) prefer supreme pizza, but I’m more of a pepperoni type gal, I made two pizzas.  I have made my own red sauce before, but with Bella on the way, I had stocked a few cans of Prego simply for convenience.

My husband was concerned that the cost savings wouldn’t be worth the effort.  In total, I spent around an hour on prep work.  I made two large pizzas, which fed 4 adults and 1 toddler with leftovers for the next day.  My final cost came in at right under $11!  Considering that we usually spend around $30 – $35 on take-out pizza, I’d say it was completely worth it.  It tasted fabulous, was much less greasy, and cost less.

To save time in the future, I plan to keep chopped peppers and onions in the freezer and to make a double batch of dough, stocking one away in the freezer for the next pizza night.

Overall, homemade pizza was a success and it will now be a regular menu item in our household.
