Tips to Keep Your Home Running Smoothly

As most of you know, we bought our home out of foreclosure.  It was inexpensive, less than a lot of people pay for a new car, but we also bought it “as-is.”  Thankfully, it was in good condition and we haven’t had any major problems.. yet.  We’ve had some minor problems with our central air & heating unit.  Y’all may remember that I whined A LOT last summer when we lived without air conditioning for a week.  No air and pregnancy?  Not a good combination.

Because we are a cash only family, we still haven’t replaced the unit.  We’ve had it worked on a couple times, but we are waiting on it to die for good and then we’ll buy a new system.  Things like this make me seriously consider a home protection plan.  In all honesty, I didn’t even realize such a thing existed until recently!  We’ve replaced our clothes dryer and worked on our water heater during the past 12 months and those things would have more than likely been covered.

I found some great tips from American Home Shield to keep things in working order.  One thing we do every month is change the air filters.  I also clean the lint filter after each load of clothes.  Not only is a full lint filter a fire hazard, but it will prevent your dryer from working efficiently.

Do you have a home warranty?  Feel free to share your tips to keep appliances and major systems working well!

(Now I’m off to go clean my oven.  If you saw the inside of it, you’d wonder how it’s still working.  Gross!)
