I had some of the cutest tomato pickers this morning. The twins have picked several green tomatoes so far (usually with me in the background squealing “nooooooo!” 😂) so it was cool to finally encourage them to pick an actual ripe tomato. Also whhhhhhhhyy does Bella look grown!? 😭

I guess weekly bouquets are a thing now. So many ideas floating around my head. It’s going to be a season of constant learning and growing and harvesting and mistakes and missteps. I’m here for it.

One year ago, I’d never grown anything from seed.

Now I’m dreaming of a tiny flower farm offering subscriptions for bouquets, fresh eggs, and homegrown vegetables.

That escalated quickly. 😬

3AM just fed the baby and holy crap, I have a 20 year old thoughts.

20 years ago, a baby boy was born. I was 12 years old and beebopping my way into the seventh grade completely unaware my son had been born. Crazy thought, right?

Even 10ish years later when we crossed paths for the first time, I had no idea that 5 years later, we would become your guardians while attempting to provide a soft place to land during a hard time. What we all thought would be temporary turned into forever.

That’s the thing about adoption- it’s born from heartache and brokenness. And if I could change every wrong thing, every bad thing, every loss that led you to us, I would because that’s what mamas do. They are fixers and make-it-all-betterers. But I can’t do that so instead I will just say that if all of that had to happen, I’m so thankful it led our family together. If I could mend every broken thing, I would but I would never change getting to be your mom.

You simultaneously worry me to death and save my sanity while I drive you crazy because that’s also what moms do, I guess. Or at least this one. 😅 Thank you for all you do for all of us but especially thank you for being the best big brother I could ever imagine. I don’t know if you know it, but all of the kids worship the ground you walk on especially that 7 year old little sister you tuck in every night. 😭 Without you, I don’t know if I would have survived twins. They both think you hung the moon.

I didn’t know you as a baby. You walked through my door as a teenager. You may have never been my baby, but you will always be my boy- even if you are 20 and becoming an amazing man. I’m so proud of you, who you are and who you are becoming.

Happy birthday, Jessie Baugh. I love you!

Yesterday brought me the most hands-on (hands-in)

Yesterday brought me the most hands-on (hands-in) farm experience to date. I rounded the corner of the house and could immediately tell that our June was in labor. About 10 minutes after everyone left for work, she started pushing. The head slipped out pretty easily, but it didn’t take long for me to realize the rest of the baby was stuck. Stuck, stuck. I ran to the house to grab lube and gloves which I had stocked just in case (thank goodness for people who willingly share so much information online) while also calling Justin and asking him to come back home.

I nervously gloved up and lubed up and tried to help baby out. With no success. Justin got home and tried to help. He finally walked away to call the vet. We were sure we were going to lose the baby so saving June became our main priority. I sat and held the babies head in my hands. I petted his little face and cried waiting on Justin to get back. Then I decided to try again. I knew if I could just reach one of his legs, I could get him out. But I had been trying for over half an hour at this point. His face was the only thing out and his legs were tucked SO far back under him. June was so tired that she was no longer really pushing. I went in again and finally got a leg that was tucked under the baby and I refused to let go. Justin was on the other side of the house so it was just me. It would have been helpful to have someone holding June because when I say baby was stuck, I mean that I pulled with everything I had and pulled June with me. Just picture me dragging a goat across a barn by her damn baby. 😩 But I was not letting go of that leg I’d finally found so I kept pulling mom and all until baby finally released. What a freaking moment. I just cradled the new baby while yelling for Justin saying “I got it! I got it!” He was on the phone with a vet who we thankfully ended up not needing.

Annnnd baby was a healthy little buckling and he is a singleton. June rested for a few minutes then started cleaning him up. We gave her some warm molasses water. I made sure he nursed before leaving them alone. Mama was up and doing well. As of this morning, mom and baby Augustus “Gus” are great!

It’s been a wild, chaotic, busy few weeks. After a year of mostly staying home and not spending time with anyone, it’s been nice to be around our families, able to attend school events, and just generally out in the world again. We’ve hosted at our home more in the last few weeks than the last 10 years. We are hosting again this weekend and then taking a break. I have honestly loved opening our home and enjoying the space both inside and out with family and friends. I’ll never take our home and land for granted.

We wrapped up school last week with Bryson’s 6th grade graduation and class picnic. The same day, we said yes to a sibling foster placement- our first foster kids since February 2020. They were able to go to family members after the 72 hour hearing so it was a short 45 hour placement. I learned a lot about myself during that 2 days- mostly that I think we may be ready to hang up our foster parent hats. The kids were great and nothing went wrong. I just realized that being able to focus on my family and my 6 kids is a gift right now. Maybe we will just offer respite or maybe I’ll change my mind. I don’t know but I do know that I’m not ready to commit to long term placements right now. Logistically it just doesn’t work for us right now and I think it’s okay to admit that.

We were able to take our entire family out on the boat over the weekend. It was the first time since the twins were born and they are 2.5. It was so much fun even if it is still a lot of work with littles. I feel like I’m gaining a little bit of freedom as everyone gets older and I’m not mad about it. I thought I would want to care for babies until I was old and gray but that has definitely changed. I think the twins did me in in that sense. 😅

In other news, I’ve continued to grow in my love of flower and vegetable gardening. This is my first little bouquet cut from my own yard and I’m maybe a little proud of it. We started planting for fall over the weekend and I’m so excited to see it all come together over the next several months.

So that’s where we are and what’s going on. I’m so excited for summer and boating and gardening and new farm babies. Life is good.
