Saving Money

Saving Money by Buying in Bulk

We were down to our last few packages of ground chuck this week and a local store was having a sale on it, so I decided to stock up.  The catch?  You have to buy the family packs which are usually about 4lbs each.  Out of curiosity, I checked the price of the regular packages.  They were $3.19 per pound!

I bought 5 packages for a total of 19.1 pounds.  Instead of sticking them in the freezer, I repackaged them in freezer bags.  We now have 16 packs of ground chuck ready to go.  My husband also made up three meatloaves from the packs, so in all we were able to get (19) 1 lb packages of meat from this purchase.  (We aren’t going to eat all three meatloaves right away; we stuck one in the freezer and invited my parents over for dinner.)

It took me about 15 minutes to repackaged all of the ground chuck and stick them in the freezer.  I paid $1.78 a pound because I chose to buy the family packs.  For a savings of over $25, I can take 15 minutes to do a bit of work.

Here they are ready to go in the freezer.  What do you buy in bulk?

I also buy meat wholesale, though it's more for my partner's benefit than mine, as I'm not much of a meat eater. The first time I did it, I was an absolute twit and forgot to separate it into portions. Now every time I buy meat from our local cash & carry, my partner asks me if we need to buy a hammer and chisel. I doubt I'm ever going to be allowed to forget it!

Otherwise, it's toothbrushes, because I'll always need them, they'll always wear out and they don't take up much space. Also, pet food, as I have two cats and a dog that never stop eating. And eggs, oddly enough, as I tend to get through them like nobody's business. (Bit of an unhealthy omelette obsession I'm afraid! 🙂 ) I also buy toilet paper and kitchen roll, as storage space isn't an issue.

And that's about it I think.
