Homemade Water Color Paints

Water Colors LOGO 1

Homemade water colors paints are new to my kids.  They've enjoyed finger paint and chalk paint, but never water color paints.  You can go buy water color paints, but why?  You probably have everything you need in the pantry to make them right at home.  Bryson and I made our first set last week and I am thrilled with the results.  The process got a bit messy when Bryson knocked one over, but the fun was worth the mess. As we mixed them up, I let him do some of the coloring and stirring.  I showed him how by mixing certain colors, you can create a new color.  These are fun to paint with, but don't forget to enjoy the process and take advantage of those teachable moments! Ingredients: 4 tbsp. baking soda 2 tsp. white vinegar 1/2 tsp. light corn syrup 2 tsp. corn starch food colors* containers for storing paints* something to stir with (toothpicks) * I used liquid food colors, but you could also use gel colors. * I found these little paint cups at Hobby Lobby.  … [Read more...]

Cutest EVER – Shaped Hard Boiled Eggs

Car Egg Mold

I hadn't planned to post about these awesome little shaped hard boiled eggs, but people loved them when I posted a photo on Facebook and Instagram.  I was sure that everyone knew about these easy eggs, but not so.  Everyone wanted to know "How did you do that!?"  So, I thought a post was in order. It all starts with super cheap egg molds.  WHAT!?  Egg molds?  Yes, egg molds.   And seriously, less than $2 bucks a piece.  So go buy a pack or.. three.  We have the fish and car egg mold set, but I am definitely going to buy more. It's so simple that I feel silly even dedicating a post to shaped hard boiled eggs.  These molds do come with instructions, but they are not written in English. How to make shaped hard boiled eggs: Step 01:  Boil your eggs, just like any other time.  Don't ask me how- I just put a few eggs into a pot of water, sprinkle in some salt, turn them up, let 'em boil, check on 'em, and go back to get them.. when I remember.  Or hear the water … [Read more...]

COOL WHIP Rainbow Pudding Pie – Recipe

COOL WHIP Rainbow Pie

Bryson is following in his dad's footsteps- he loves to cook.  If someone is working in the kitchen, he's right there too.  He'll contentedly sit on the counter stirring whatever is cooking.  I love that about him and I take every opportunity to nurture and encourage his love of cooking.  I'm so proud that my mother-in-law taught my husband how to cook and I want to do the same for my boy. He'll help with any meal, but when I mention the word "rainbow" and "pie" in the same sentence- he is ready to start working!  This is a super simple recipe with very little work involved.  There is no heat or cooking required so it's safe for little ones to help out.  It's a basic pudding pie, turned rainbow, and made even more delicious by adding COOL WHIP Whipped Topping. Ingredients - 1 box pudding mix - 2 1/2 cups milk - 1 pie crust (I used Oreo) - food colors - COOL WHIP Directions -Mix the pudding and milk according to the directions on the box. -Divide the pudding … [Read more...]

Scented Kool-Aid Play Dough Recipe – Preschool Craft & Activity

Scented Kool-Aid Play Dough

Much like the edible finger paint recipe last week, I have another great recipe to share that stems from a flop.  This time it's scented Kool-Aid play dough.  Still no luck making edible slime!  It seems that everyone on the Internet has re-posted the exact same recipe that doesn't work.  I've searched and searched, read through comments on posts, etc. and I can't figure out why people keep posting a recipe that is no good.  Maybe just for the searches?  I don't know, but it is annoying me- just in case you can't tell, haha. Scented Kool-Aid Play Dough Ingredients - 1/2 cup salt -1 cup water -2 tsp cream of tartar -1 cup flour -2 tsp vegetable oil -1 packet flavored drink mix (Kool-Aid) Directions In a medium sauce pan, mix all ingredients together. Stir over medium-low heat until it begins to thicken. When you start to see mostly dry spots and the mixture pulls away from the pan, turn off heat. Allow to cool, knead, and enjoy! Bryson (3) enjoys cooking, … [Read more...]

Edible Finger Paint Recipe – Preschool Craft & Activity

Edible Finger Paint

Let me start off by saying this edible finger paint recipe came about as a happy accident.  I was trying to create an edible slime recipe with a texture similar to my original homemade slime.  Well, it didn't work.. at all.  In an attempt to save my ingredients from being thrown in the trash, I grabbed a pack of flavored drink mix and voila- I knew in an instant that I had, indeed, saved my project and that the kids were going to LOVE the result.  And they certainly did- see photos at the bottom of this post. Edible Finger Paint Recipe Ingredients -1 14oz can Sweetened Condensed Milk -4 Tbs. Cornstarch  (You can probably use less, but I was attempting slime so I wanted it thicker.  2 Tbs. should be plenty.) -1 pack flavored drink mix (Kool-Aid) Directions Pour sweetened condensed milk into a medium sauce pan.  Stir in cornstarch. Cook on medium-low heat until well combined.  Add flavored drink mix and stir well. Remove from heat and let cool before playing … [Read more...]

Peanut Butter Play Dough Recipe

Peanut butter Play Dough

Miss Bella has been feeling left out lately.  It seems like every time we make something, it isn't safe for her to play with because she wants to taste everything. This peanut butter play dough recipe turned out to be perfect for her and I loved that watching sister and brother play together.  With the homemade slime and the original play dough recipes out, I decided it was time to make something that she could enjoy, something safe, something tasty. Peanut Butter Play Dough Recipe Peanut Butter Play Dough Ingredients: - 1 cup peanut butter - 1/2 cup honey - 2 cups powdered sugar Directions: Dump all ingredients in a bowl and mix well.  I used my Kitchen Aid stand mixer after an unsuccessful attempt at mixing it up with a spoon.  I turned the mixer on low and it was ready in no time. Obviously, you don't want to have this around children with a nut allergy.  I wouldn't recommend carrying it to school.  This one is best to make and play with at home.  I love … [Read more...]

Soap Crayons – DIY Gift, Stocking Stuffer, or Party Favor Idea

Soap Crayons

While browsing Pinterest, I came across these cute soap crayons and decided to give them a try.  The "recipe" calls for items that you probably already have on hand and the process is extremely simple. Whatcha Need: a bar of white soap food colors water cookie cutters, candy molds, or something similar Directions: Grate your bar of soap.  I cut open a Johnson's Buddies soap and used it.  I love the way they smell!  I used my kitchen grater and it worked well.  You need approximately one cup of grated soap. Divide your grated soap into bowls.  One bowl for each color you want.  I used about 1/4 cup in each bowl and made 4 colors. Add a bit of hot water to each bowl- a little less than a tablespoon per bowl.  Use a spoon or fork to mash it all together until you reach a good consistency and all of the pieces are incorporated. Add a few drops of food colors, mixing until you reach your desired color. Press soap mixture into cookie cutters or molds and … [Read more...]

Fun Shaped Crayons – DIY Gift, Stocking Stuffer, or Party Favor Idea

DIY Crayons

I've saw versions of these homemade crayons all over blogland and Pinterest.  I finally decided it was time to give them a try myself!  I had some old crayons.  Really old crayons.  They were MY crayons when I was a kid.  Now, I'm not old, but I'm thinking a crayon's years have to be kind of like dog years, so they were OLD.  Anyways, I decided it was time to put them to use and what better way, right!? Homemade Crayon Supplies Crayons Silicone Molds Instructions: Remove the crayons from their wrappers. Snap into pieces with your hands or chop up with a knife.  I found it easier to just break each crayon into about 4 pieces with my hands. Mix up in a bowl, then add the pieces to your molds. Bake at 225 degrees for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and let harden.  I'm impatient so I put mine in the freezer and they were ready a few minutes later. Pop out of molds and voila! You could make these homemade crayons to match any party theme in any … [Read more...]
