Scented Kool-Aid Play Dough Recipe – Preschool Craft & Activity

Much like the edible finger paint recipe last week, I have another great recipe to share that stems from a flop.  This time it’s scented Kool-Aid play dough.  Still no luck making edible slime!  It seems that everyone on the Internet has re-posted the exact same recipe that doesn’t work.  I’ve searched and searched, read through comments on posts, etc. and I can’t figure out why people keep posting a recipe that is no good.  Maybe just for the searches?  I don’t know, but it is annoying me- just in case you can’t tell, haha.

Scented Kool-Aid Play Dough

Ingredients

– 1/2 cup salt
-1 cup water
-2 tsp cream of tartar
-1 cup flour
-2 tsp vegetable oil
-1 packet flavored drink mix (Kool-Aid)

Directions

In a medium sauce pan, mix all ingredients together.
Stir over medium-low heat until it begins to thicken.
When you start to see mostly dry spots and the mixture pulls away from the pan, turn off heat.
Allow to cool, knead, and enjoy!

Bryson (3) enjoys cooking, so he helped make this batch.  He poured and mixed the ingredients, then did some of the stirring for me.  Kids love the opportunity to be involved and they feel accomplished when they see the end result.  Never pass up a chance to let them help- it’s worth the extra effort and little bit of mess!

The Kool-Aid gives this play dough a fun scent and color.  I used Hawaiian Punch here, but I want to try some other flavors too.  I think the texture is a little lighter and fluffier than my other homemade play dough.  It is safe for little ones and it’ll be okay if they try to eat it, but they’ll probably decide it doesn’t taste too well.  Bella took a bite and quickly spit it back out- it’s very salty!

Speaking of Bella, she helped me with the photos for this post.  I started to shoo her away, but then I realized that little hand actually made the photos cuter.  Instead, I encouraged her to dig in and play while I snapped away.  I know this sweet, chubby hand won’t be little for long and I love having it captured for life.

Continuing my search for an edible slime recipe…  Any ideas?
