Electronic Cigarettes – The Smoking Alternative

I grew up watching both of my parents smoke.  I whined, complained, and hid ash trays.  I hated it.

At 14, I smoked my first cigarette.   By 15, I was a smoker.

I quit smoking over a year ago and I still want a cigarette quite often.  I tell myself no each and every time.  It’s not easy.  It’s not fun.

Quitting is possible though.

My dad has smoked for 35 years.  Like most smokers, he’s tried to quit several times.   He’s chewed the gum.  He’s worn the patches.  He’s taken the pills.

He is still a smoker.

He wants to quit.  I know this and believe this 110%.

But smoking- it’s an addiction.

He hit 50 in January.  (Sorry Dad, there I go sharing your age again.)

It’s time to quit.  For good.

I think we are finally on the right path for him.  This path is different for everyone.

I quit cold turkey.  My husband quit smoking, but still dips tobacco.  (Gross, I know.)

Electronic cigarettes.  I’m sure you’ve heard about them, probably wondered about them, maybe even saw one in person.

For my dad, if there is an answer- this is it.

He is using the Deluxe Starter Kit from South Beach Smoke.

Immediately, he went from smoking 2 packs a day to less than 1 pack each day.  That, my friends, is some major progress.

The best part of this process is that it didn’t require any medication and his attitude/ moods haven’t changed.  If you’ve ever been around someone trying to quit smoking, you know how it is.  The quitter will drive themselves and everyone around them crazy.  They are moody, irritable, and very easily agitated.  That doesn’t happen with an e-cig.

I  have faith that he’ll be smoke free by the end of 2012.  For the first time, I think he even thinks it’s possible.

My mom is going jump on board too, so I hope that quitting together and switching to e-cigarettes will work for them both.

Why try an electronic cigarette?

– It’s cheaper than cigarettes.
– It doesn’t stink or produce a smell.
– You aren’t polluting the air.
– You aren’t inhaling carcinogens.
– You can “smoke” in public places- even inside non-smoking restaurants.
– You don’t have to brave the weather just to give your nicotine fix.

I think the better question is

Why not?

You have nothing to lose.  Absolutely nothing.

My dad’s only complaint is that the e-cig doesn’t feel like a regular cigarette and it’s heavier.  That’s it.  I’d say it’s a pretty fair trade and well worth it.

He finished up the cartridges we received for review, so he and my mom placed an order.  That’s a huge step in the right direction.  After coupon and bulk pricing, they paid $102 for 60 cartridges.  Each cartridge is the equivalent of 1 1/2 – 2 packs!

I will update on their progress next month.  Maybe that will help keep them accountable!

Have you tried e-cigs?   I’d love to hear about your experience!

  • I quit smoking when I found out I was pregnant back in August. It STILL is hard on me, but my sweet husband started using electronic cigarettes so I wouldn’t smell it and crave them.

  • Good for you for quitting cold turkey! I’ve never been a smoker, but since I have an addictive personality I know I wouldn’t have the willpower to quit like that. Best of luck to your dad! I’m glad he has a tool like this to help him.

    • I don’t know about other brands, but I do know that South Beach Smoke offers menthol in 4 different strengths. Oh how I use to love me a Marlboro Menthol!

  • A guy here at work uses e-cigs exclusively and he seems pretty happy with them. The management team hasn’t quite figured out how to handle indoor “smoking” like this, though.

  • I also grew up around my parents smoking so this is a post I can relate to. The electronic cigarette has made it easier for me to quit. Thanks for giving me someone t o relate to.
