While browsing Pinterest, I came across these cute soap crayons and decided to give them a try. The “recipe” calls for items that you probably already have on hand and the process is extremely simple.
Whatcha Need:
- a bar of white soap
- food colors
- water
- cookie cutters, candy molds, or something similar
Directions:
- Grate your bar of soap. I cut open a Johnson’s Buddies soap and used it. I love the way they smell! I used my kitchen grater and it worked well. You need approximately one cup of grated soap.
- Divide your grated soap into bowls. One bowl for each color you want. I used about 1/4 cup in each bowl and made 4 colors.
- Add a bit of hot water to each bowl- a little less than a tablespoon per bowl. Use a spoon or fork to mash it all together until you reach a good consistency and all of the pieces are incorporated.
- Add a few drops of food colors, mixing until you reach your desired color.
- Press soap mixture into cookie cutters or molds and freeze.
I used my Wilton cookie cutter set and lined a baking pan with waxed paper for easy clean up. You’ll want to freeze them for at least a few hours or overnight. These are great for kids and they’d make cute stocking stuffers or party favors!
I originally saw this idea at Instructables.
Well that is a cool idea. I’m going to try that.
I love this idea. We might have to work on this with the kids!
That is a GREAT idea for stocking stuffers!!
very cute!! do they leave color on the kids or bath though??
The color does come off on the kids, but we just make sure to scrub them and the tub down really well right before taking them out of the bath. So far, we’ve had no staining and Bryson loves it.

Do these actually color on the tub walls or are they more like a colored soap?
Bryson, my 3 years old, uses these to color on the tub walls and then he washes with them too. Hope that helps!
Awesome! Thanks.
Great idea. thanks for sharing. I’m a new follower

Can these set in the fridge instead? I have no room in the freezer but want to make these asap!
I’m not 100% sure, but if you leave them in there overnight, it will probably work. Let us know how it goes!
Wow, I didn’t know you can make these so easily! They look great! I’m saving this post.
Very nice! I can’t wait to try it myself.
This looks like a fun project to get the kids involved in doing too.
I tried this and it didn’t work at all. As soon as they “thawed” they turned to mush again. I tried other sites and they suggested letting them dry in a warm dy place for a couple of days. SO, I’m trying that now. I hope that works. I grated a lot of soap! 🙂
Oh no, I hope you can save them! Maybe next time try cutting the water back a little. Let us know if they dry out. Sorry they didn’t work out as planned!
Nope. They did dry out and I was able to get them out of the molds I used, but then they didn’t leave a mark on the tub at all… I must be jinxed. Oh well, nothing lost. I used soap I got free with coupons.
I had the same issues – tried both ways.
great ideas for children…i run treatment programs and one of them is for women and children who live in the program for six months….we have a daycare so we are always looking for ideas for the kids!
[…] Re: Need suggestions for keeping active boy busy Oh geez, poor little guy! Three weeks will be an eternity to him. Does he do anything on the computer? There are lots of educational kids' games online – if you're interested I'll check my links and see what's appropriate. That could be good for an hour or 2 a day. Does he like puzzles? If he does jigzone.com is a great online puzzle site he might enjoy – lots of puzzles at all levels of difficulty. Even if he didn't like them before he might after playing on this site a while. It might be a good time to let him help you in the kitchen a little, maybe baking something simple like a cake or brownie mix. I used to buy soap crayons and the girls loved to play with them in the tub, writing on the bathtub and the bath wall (it's soap, comes right off).
