Down on the Farm Pumpkin Patch 2011

This weekend we did something that I’ve wanted to do for the past few years.  We finally went to the pumpkin patch!  I was probably more excited than the kids, but it’s something that I’ve wanted to do every year with Bryson- we’ve just never gotten around to it.  This was going to be the year- no ifs, ands, or buts about it!  After going, I’m glad we waited until Bryson was a little older, because he was able to participate in all of the activities and enjoy the entire place.

Our local pumpkin patch & corn maze is named Down on the Farm.  In all honesty, I had no expectations so when we arrived, I was blown away.   It was much larger than I’d imagined and there were so many places to play and things to do.  Judging by the parking lot, there was a large crowd there but because the place is so big, I never noticed once inside.  We didn’t have to wait in line for anything.  If you have kids, you know that waiting in lines usually doesn’t go too well.  So, thank goodness for that!

Once inside, Bryson was able to hop from one thing to the next.  There were two corn pits, several “pony” swings, big tires to play on, two slides, plenty of animals to feed, a simulated milking cow, a bone-dig sand bed, a corn maze, a tractor ride, pumpkin picking and painting, a cow train ride, and a field of baled hay for to play on.  If you plan to do it all, I would suggest setting aside at least 3 hours.  We were there almost 3 hours and had it not been way past nap-time, we probably would have stayed another hour or two.  We brought our pumpkins home to paint because we knew our time was limited because of how tired Bryson was and because he would rather play on their equipment than paint.  We also didn’t do the corn maze, because again, Bryson wanted to play instead.

Both of the kids had a blast.  Bryson loved everything about the place and Bella was just happy to be there.  She enjoyed the corn pit and surprisingly didn’t even try to eat any.  She also liked the pony swings they had set up.  We fed the animals and Bryson conquered the field of hay bales.  He was pretty impressive with his balance and once while we were trying to take a photo of Bella, he took over to the other end of the bales.  No worries though, because Daddy & Bella chased him down.  It’s definitely a great place for kids to run off some energy!

Bryson’s favorite part was an old harvester that they had set-up.  Kids could get inside and act like they were driving.  Slides had been built on the front and back so it doubled as a piece of play equipment too.  Justin and I joked that we totally need one of those at home.  We had to bribe and beg Bryson to get off of it and try out some of the other activities.  At the very end, we let him go back to it and that, my friends, was a mistake.  It was past naptime and when he realized it was time to go, the tears came flowing.  He cried and kicked and screamed and hubs & I just looked at each other like “uhhh.. lets get the h-e-double-l out of here!”  Then, we hightailed it to the truck.  Except, we weren’t moving too fast because we were practically dragging an almost three year old.  Still, totally worth it.

Overall, it was probably one of my favorite family outings thus far.  The day was beyond fabulous and the memories from it are something I’ll treasure forever.  I am so in love with our little family and it’s so much fun to go out together.  I love it all- from picking out their outfits, to listening to the chatter in the backseat, to holding Bryson’s hand and wearing Bella in the ergo carrier.  Even the meltdowns are okay because I’ll take them over the alternative any day.  My heart is so full of joy and I’m so thankful for my husband and my babies.  I know that’s sappy, but this day was so close to perfect that I can’t even put it into words.
